The Italian writer Grazia Deledda was born in Nuoro, Sardinia, September 27, 1871. She started to write early. After her marriage in 1899 with Palmiro Mardesani, she moved to Rome. Her novels depict vividly the life in Sardinia. In 1926 she received the Nobel prize for Literature "for her idealistically inspired writings which with plastic clarity picture the life on her native island and with depth and sympathy deal with human problems in general."
